Different dining options for Christmas
FOR many, Christmas dinner means eating out. Restaurants tend to be busy on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, so reservations are strongly recommended.
The following new restaurants run by foreigners offers something a little different for Christmas including a North Korean eatery and two from Europe.
Wan Xiu Tai Korean Restaurant
The first North Korean Restaurant in Zhejiang Province, Wan Xiu Tai is state run and near Xixi Wetland.
The chefs and waitresses are from North Korea and the bill runs an average of 200 yuan (US$32.6) per person. At first glance, this may seem expensive but it includes a performance by the waitresses and food at “national banquet level.”
The waitresses wear traditional Korean clothing and are all young and attractive. They sing, dance and play instruments, mostly traditional Korean songs and dances.
They end the meal with a song praising the country’s army. Sometimes diners are invited onto the stage to dance.
The tableware is also good — the plates and pots are bronze, and the chopsticks are metal.
A Korean style hotpot known as Celestial Stove comes recommended. In ancient times, it was only served to nobles during festivals.
Beef, tripe, fish, eggs, tofu, several kinds of green vegetables, mushrooms, as well as nuts and nut powder are stewed. The ingredients need be put into the pot at the right time so they are not overcooked and add flavor to the soup.
Only set menus are available ranging from 268 yuan to 658 yuan for two persons.
The more expensive set includes abalone stewed with steak; braised pollack; preserved sea cucumber; and sea crab, which is served as a cold dish.
Call at least a week in advance to book a table.

Restaurant Fuego
The largest Spanish Restaurant in the city — capacity for 200 — just started its trial run this month and offers authentic Spanish cuisine.
Fuego means fire and the restaurant’s name is derived from its stone-and-brick-piled stove which is used to roast small pigs and sometimes potatoes.
The roasted suckling pig is Fuego’s specialty.
The boss is Chinese but he has run restaurants in Spain for over three decades. He returned to China to broaden his business horizons.
The menu also includes Iberian ham, risotto, seafood rice, seafood fideuà, and tapas like tortilla and flamenquines.

The Kebab House
This restaurant was opened by a Swedish student because he missed his favorite hometown foods.
The menu is varied with everything from kebabs and pizzas to salmon and Swedish meatballs.
The Swedish mashed potato dish comes with a large piece of salmon, a pile of potatoes and kebabs.
“It looks like the ingredients are cheap, but actually they are not,” says the owner, adding the salmon is imported from Norway and the Hollandaise sauce is made by the house.
The Swedish meatballs are made with pork and beef and come with mashed potatoes. They are surprisingly good and come with lingonberry jam imported from Sweden.
The thin-crust pizzas deserve a thumbs up due to the great taste. The handmade pizzas are baked in a stone stove and the sauces are made in house. The ketchup is a combination of seven sauces mixed according to a secret recipe.
