Cultural expo showcases wide range of nifty products

CHINA Hangzhou Cultural and Creative Industry Expo guests were treated to some real surprises.

A camera made of paper, cups made from tea leaves and bamboo fiber, and a life-sized zebra made of cardboard that can carry a person, these were just a few of the exhibits that excited more than 230,000 expo visitors.

Organizers have deemed the event a success with 420 million yuan (US$68.4 million) in sales rung up during the four-day event, which ended on Monday, and 2.5 billion yuan worth of contracts to be signed later. The eighth annual expo was sponsored by the Hangzhou government, Zhejiang University and the China Academy of Art.

“This year’s expo was interesting enough to catch eyes and attract capital,” said local buyer Chen Jun, who has attended the event every year.

The Hangzhou International Design Festival, China Cultural Heritage Expo and the Best Design Exhibition by China Academy of Art were all part of the expo.

Commodities evoking traditional culture were a particular highlight among visitors.

For example, Taiwan exhibitors displayed a rice strain once planted along the coast of the Pacific Ocean but is nearly extinct now because of a decrease in farmers.

Taiwan Echo Group introduced a series of audio books about Suzhou City.

“Our Suzhou series is only one of our many audio products,” the exhibitor said.

“We aim to establish a database of traditional Chinese folk culture so the next generation can share it and be moved by it.”

The expo covering 60,000 square meters attracted more than 800 agencies from foreign countries such as the US, France, Germany and the UK. There were more than 1,200 domestic exhibitors from the Chinese mainland.

An online fair will keep exhibiting and selling commodities available at the expo. Online sales of 170 million yuan were recorded during the event.

Though the main expo is over, some events considered a part of the expo will continue. They are listed below.

Date: November 6-9

Venue: Zhejiang World Trade Exhibition Center, 122 Shuguang Rd
