Creative growth

Hangzhou’s cultural and creative industries generated 223.21 billion yuan (US$34.88 billion) in 2015, up 20.4 percent from the prior year, according to a recent white paper from the municipal government.

In comparison, the city’s overall economy expanded by 10.2 percent over the same period. Cultural and creative industries accounted for 22.2 percent of the city’s total GDP last year, which exceeded 1 trillion yuan (US$153 billion).

Hangzhou is home to numerous enterprises specializing in animation, video games, creative design, leisure and travel, new media, exhibition and convention services, Internet technology, education, and training.

Events like the China International Cartoon and Animation Festival and the Hangzhou Cultural Expo attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Hangzhou joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2012. Local authorities identified the cultural and creative industries as key drivers of economic growth under a resolution adopted in 2007.
