Cheers to 2016 with homemade ales and lagers

IF you want to bid goodbye to 2015 in style, Hangzhou’s bars and clubs have you covered. Discounts, parties and bands or DJs are just some of the specials that venues have come up with to attract the New Year’s crowds. But what if you want to celebrate with a refreshing lager, pilsner or stout, brewed right on venue? The options for home-brewed beer are limited in the city. Shanghai Daily has picked three of the top home-brewed beer joints in Hangzhou.

The first and only Czech restaurant in Hangzhou, Pilsner is run by a Czech-Chinese couple and provides authentic cuisine as well as beer brewed in house by Czech experts.

The couple used to run Chinese restaurants in the Czech Republic but has now turned the tables and opened a Czech restaurant in China when they noticed that there was an increasing demand for Western food. They hired chef Jan Clef who used to work as a state banquet cook, and Czech brewers, whose wives sometimes sing in the bar.

Customers can take a little tour through the zero-degree-Celsius cold brewing room.

Stout, ale or beer comes at a price of about 88 yuan (US$13.56) a liter. The foam is rich and the ale has a strong scent and leaves a crispy feeling in your mouth. Between January 1 and 9, Pilsner is setting up a lottery where customers can win free beer and other gifts.

Recommended dishes include raw sirloin with bruschetta, and Pilsner roasted pig’s feet.

Raw sirloin, a tender cut of beef, is finely chopped and stirred with eight kinds of seasonings.

Roasted pig’s feet is a signature dish in the Czech Republic. Pilsner soaks the pig’s feet in its home-brewed beer and honey for at least six hours before they are roasted.

If you’re craving a sip of a real German beer during New Year’s, Schanke is your best bet.

Owner Wang Lei got a German company to help him set up his beer bar that now features 14 stainless-steel brewing vats that produce Weissbier and Schwarzbier.

The bar’s signature product is known as the “boards.” They serve glasses of beer on boards of various lengths, starting at 1 meter consisting of 12 glasses of beer — perfect to share.

The bar also serves German dishes reminiscent of Oktoberfest, like pork knuckles and sausages, but pizzas and salads can also be found on the menu. A house band performs every evening from 9pm on.

On New Year’s Eve, however, the band is joined by performances by a violinist and dancers as well as the lottery.

Cheerday is a local specialty beer made from Qiaodao Lake’s water.

A few bottles of Cheerday are already common companions for a warm summer day but earlier this week, after 27 years of beer brewing, Cheerday has opened its first bar in Hangzhou with six types of beer on offer.

“Baymax” is the white beer brewed with banana and apple, “Godfather” is a stout that smells like black berry and black truffle, “Brave Heart” is an ale with golden liquid and a high alcohol level, and “Heaven Road” is made of barley grown in Tibet.

Food to match the beer includes German-style BBQ sausages, crispy pork knuckles, Indonesian-style coffee-roasted fish, and Chinese-style seafood boiled in stone pot.

Coffee and snacks are also available during the daytime. During New Year’s Day and until January 4, the whole menu is 20 percent off.
