Cartoonist Xia’s masterwork series on display

THE Hangzhou Library is displaying famous cartoonist Xia Da’s signature work “Chang Ge Xing” in its exhibition hall.

As one of China’s most popular young cartoonists, Xia’s exhibition has already attracted a number of fans. On the first weekend, more than 1,000 turned up, including some fans who traveled a long way.

“Chang Ge Xing” is based on the historic Xuanwu Gate Incident during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). At the time, Emperor Gaozu named his eldest son Li Jiancheng as successor, but his second son Li Shimin launched a coup d’etat and usurped the throne.

Li Jiancheng was killed in the coup, but historical documents don’t indicate the fate of his daughter, Princess Yongning.

Xia’s story begins with the princess in exile.

“Chang Ge Xing” started to be serialized in 2011. There are more than 1,300 scripts to date and it has been published in Japan and Taiwan. The series, which combines Chinese ink-wash painting techniques with a modern comic book style, has won special acclaim among fans who are interested in Tang Dynasty culture.

Xia focused on recreating the imperial court, clothing, social life and architecture of the Tang Dynasty with as much detail as possible to bring it to life. Historians consider the Tang Dynasty the most prosperous in Chinese history.
