Backup water source

BAIMA Lake will become a backup water source for Binjiang District after water supply facilities are built in 2016, district officials have said.

Water consumption has increased about 10 percent a year in Binjiang and the Qiantang River is currently the district’s only water source.

If the river is polluted in a major spill, the district will suffer a water crisis. To prevent that crisis, the district government decided to build facilities to draw water from Baima Lake in case the Qiantang River is polluted. The lake can supply water for three to seven days.

Meanwhile, the Binjiang Water Utility is being expanded and the project, costing about 300 million yuan, will be completed in 2016 and double the utility’s water supply.
