Wudalianchi known for its volcanoes

LOCATED in the northern part of Heilongjiang Province, Wudalianchi Scenic Area covers 1,060 square kilometers and has extensive volcanic landforms.

The scenic spot features the world’s most complete and well-preserved volcanic landforms and locals refer to it as an “open textbook on volcanoes.” Rare geological formations in the area include 11 shield and 14 compound volcanoes.

Heilong Mountain and Huoshao Mountain are young volcanoes that formed between 1719 and 1721.

Heilong Mountain is a passive volcano although it has erupted six times. It is the second largest volcano in Wudalianchi and has an altitude of 515 meters. The mountain’s scenic sites consist of Stone Sea, Water Curtain Cave, Fairy Palace, Volcano Forest, Crater and more. Huoshao Mountain is a small volcano and is 4 kilometers from Heilong Mountain.

After a series of volcanic eruptions, the Bai River was divided into five parts that have since become small lakes, which are connected by underground rivers. There is a legend of a monster living in the third lake that pokes its head above the water’s surface from time to time.

Each lake contains different minerals and can appear green, blue, brown or yellow depending on weather conditions.

The Yaoquan Mountain area is famous for its springs.

Wudalianchi is one of the world’s three biggest sources of cold spring water along with the French Vichy and the Russian Caucasus mineral water. Water from Wudalianchi contains more than 40 trace elements beneficial to the human body.

Another Wudalianchi legend states that a hunter from Orogen shot a deer long ago. The deer ran into a pond and its wound stopped bleeding. The hunter witnessed this and was surprised. He then drank some water and felt full of vitality. After that people referred to the spring water as “holy water.”

The area is rich in vegetation with 1,044 species of plants, among which 47 are endangered. The area is also inhabited by 121 species of animals such as elks, black bears, red-crowned cranes and otters.
