The ‘best’ fish and chips in the world

NATIONALITY: German

Profession/Title: Hotelier/General Manager of Pullman Lijiang

Travel frequency: Couple of times per month

Objective of travel: Business but also leisure

Favorite traveling style: Basically flying. Long distance business class, domestic economy class. But I have also used, especially in China, the bullet trains connecting the major cities.

When I finish a journey, I always Recap my photos and give my comments and evaluation of hotels, restaurants and other highlights on social media sites. This should help other travelers gain a better understanding of the destinations and sometimes help the hotels or restaurants improve their product and service delivery in certain areas.

How many destinations have you already been?

I am very proud to say that I have traveled to all continents in this world.

Q: What kind of hotel will you choose to stay during a trip?

A: Preferably I would stay in hotels with a lot of local touch and inspired by local architectural and contemporary interiors and exteriors.

Q: What do you value most when choosing a hotel?

A: A place of warmth and comfort and with dedicated associates, nice and clean facilities and comfortable bed.

Q: What facility or service do you think is necessary during a hotel stay?

A: Excellent Wi-Fi access, good quality amenities and comfortable bed.

Q: What do you expect most of a hotel?

A: See above and furthermore attentive and personalized service delivery in a relaxing and tranquil environment. Finest offerings inspired by local cuisine with sophisticated regional touch.

Q: What do you usually do in a hotel during your stay apart from resting in your room?

A: I explore the local culture and surroundings and enjoy the local cuisine, and explore chill-out spaces offered by the hotels.

Q: How do you book a hotel with an affordable room rate?

A: Usually directly through the hotel website or contact the hotel (GM to GM) directly.

Q: Share with us an unforgettable stay in a hotel.

A: I once returned to a resort hotel in Thailand a year after my first visit and was still recognized by the doorman, bellboy and front office associate. I was checked into the same favorite room and found all my favorite amenities and fruit offers already waiting for me. The next morning, the room attendant greeted me with a big smile and addressed me by my name, wishing me a great day. And guess what, even the breakfast attendant was waiting for me, offering me my breakfast just the way I had it the year before. I believe this is the highest level of guest recognition and service you can expect.

Q: What hotels do you want to stay at in the future?

A: Definitely this hotel in Thailand I just described above. Otherwise, I would love to go and experience some of the newest hotels in the Middle East (Dubai) and also here in China.

Q: What’s your favorite destination, and why?

A: London. In this city I started my hotel career, studied and still have many friends. London in my opinion is the most sophisticated and vibrant city in Europe with cultural activities and offers that are hardly found anywhere else.

Q: What do you have to take when going to London?

A: Maybe an umbrella because of the weather.

Q: What do you do upon arriving London?

A: I go to my favorite local pub The Grenadier in Knightsbridge and enjoy the typical British pub atmosphere, a good local pint of bitter (beer) and the best fish and chips in the world.

Q: What places do you have to visit in London?

A: Portobello Market, Buckingham Palace, Oxford Street (for shopping) and SoHo are among the “must see” places when visiting London.

Q: Any local specialties you have to try?

A: A pint of bitter, and fish and chips.

Q: Share an unforgettable experience during a trip to London?

A: Working at the famous Hyde Park Hotel in London back in the 1980s, I had the unforgettable and unique experience to personally greet and meet the Queen Elizabeth II.
