Sleeping with the fish

IMAGINE sleeping in a bubble underwater. Fish from nearby reefs swim by leisurely. This is the feeling that awaits in the underwater room at The Manta Resort, near the island of Pemba in the Indian Ocean.

The landing deck of the underwater room is at sea level. It has a lounge area and bathroom. A ladder leads up to the roof, which has an area for sunbathing during the day and star gazing at night without any light pollution. Sleep under the stars to the soft murmuring of the sea.

Head downstairs to sleep surrounded by panes of glass affording almost 360-degree views of reef fish and other sea creatures. Some have taken up residence in the waters around the room, which affords them some protection from predation.

Aside from the underwater room, The Manta Resort, which opened in 2008, has 16 other rooms. It is not a five-star luxury resort, but it is an unpretentious place where guests can unwind.

Experience the hospitality that this island off the coast of Tanzania has to offer.
