Rugged beauty in Zhalantun area

DENSE pine and birch trees in remote mountains, meandering streams and springs, and sheer cliffs make the Zhalantun Tourist Scenic Area in Innner Mongolia Autonomous Region a decent destination for people who crave adventure and want to escape the city. The natural scenery attracts bounds of tourists.

As part of the Greater Khingan Mountains in Hulunbuir City, Zhalantun features a sub-humid warm temperate continental monsoon climate. The scenic area is regarded as a nice summer resort and is sometimes referred to as “small Hangzhou” — the southern Chinese city often deemed as “Heaven on Earth.”

Suspension Bridge Park, in the north of the city, is the symbol of Zhalantun. A suspension bridge built more than 100 years ago is the main attraction. Covering 68 hectares, the park is the biggest in eastern Inner Mongolia.

The whole park is divided into six zones including entertainment and animal areas. One Column Pavilion and Kenshi Garden are also worth visiting.

For people keen on excitement, the Yalu River is not to be missed. The river is 32 kilometers from the city center of Zhalantun and is one of the best places for drifting due to the beautiful scenery. Drifting entails a leisurely ride down the river on a makeshift floating contraption for a handful of people. The stretch for drifting is 12 kilometers long and visitors will notice the riverbed is covered with cobblestones. The wharf has a reception center, showers, a lounge and parking.

Covering an area of more than 100 hectares and with a vertical drop of 200 meters, the ski park at Jinglong Mountain is popular among the country’s growing legion of skiers. The park holds major skiing events and is suitable for all skill levels. Artificial snow is made to ensure skiers are never disappointed even if Mother Nature doesn’t provide any white stuff.

Other options include fishing and a cable-car ride.

The history museum is a nice stop for those curious about the area’s past. The museum was established in 2005 and has become a key cultural unit of the autonomous area with numerous local relics on display.
