Individuality and location go a long way

Q: What does traveling mean to you?

A: It’s a passion I share with my family: Discovering and enjoying different cultures with all senses.

Q: Do you prefer to travel alone or with family/friends?

A: It is always great to share new experiences with others.

Q: What kind of hotel will you choose on trips?

A: I usually find whatever I wish for amongst the wide range of diverse hotels under the Marriott umbrella. However sometimes I leave the well-known path for something unusual, a one-of-a-kind hotel or even bed & breakfast like the charming guesthouse we stayed at in the jungle of northern Sumatra.

Q: What do you value most when choosing a hotel?

A: Individuality and location — I want to get the local impression of the destination I visit.

Q: What facility or service do you think is necessary for a hotel stay?

A: A gym or a nearby park to be able to go for a run, a good espresso as I need my daily caffeine fix.

Q: What do you expect most of a hotel for an enjoyable stay?

A: Outstanding service by staff who want to make every stay memorable, a concierge who gets my idea of exploring and points me toward the hidden gems.

Q: What do you usually do in a hotel during your stay apart from resting in your room?

A: Depending on the reason for my trip, I usually try it all!

Q: How do you book a hotel with affordable room rates?

A: Online.

Q: Share with us an unforgettable stay in a hotel.

A: Staying at the Marriott Grand Hotel Flora on Via Veneto in Rome — that's where I met my wife.

Q: Is there any hotel you look forward to staying at in the future?

A: The Renaissance Place Vendome in Paris as it's such a classic location. I look forward to returning to Paris after a long time. Another is the newly opened Ritz Carlton Reserve in Ubud, Bali. We love the diversity of Bali, especially the lush greens of the rice terraces in Ubud. It’s so soothing and relaxing.

Q: If you want to share a special destination, what would it be and why?

A: Hong Kong. It has been home for many years, our daughter was born there and we still have lots of friends who we like to catch up with.

Q: What’s so special about it?

A: It's unique location with beaches and beautiful country parks with lots of hills for excellent hiking, all within easy reach from the city center. And of course Hong Kong is a shopper’s paradise.

Q: Any necessities you have to take when going to Hong Kong?

A: Sunscreen, mosquito repellent and an empty suitcase (for all the shopping). But that’s easy to get in case you forget.

Q: What do you do upon arriving in Hong Kong?

A: Drop the suitcase in the room and head to one of the dai pai dongs (street food stalls) for a bowl of tomato noodle soup. My favorite one is on Gough Street.

Q: What areas do you like to visit in Hong Kong?

A: There are always new openings to explore in the area north of Soho. They are so many narrow little streets with individual shops and restaurants.

Q: What local specialties do you have to try?

A: Dim sum, best eaten in one of the restaurants frequented by locals. One of our favorites is Tsui Hang Village in New World Tower in Central.

Q: Please share an unforgettable Hong Kong experience.

A: It’s difficult, but hiking up to Lantau Peak early in the morning and seeing the sun rise over the sea is definitely among the best.

Q: What gifts do you get for friends and family?

A: Egg rolls and cookies from Keh Wa Bakery.
