General introduction to Sanya

SANYA is a tropical paradise featuring great beaches and loads of sunshine. This leisurely holiday destination is worth visiting any time of the year.

Geographical Position:

Sanya lies on the southern tip of Hainan Island in southern China. This coastal city is south of Wuzhi Mountain with two quiet rivers running through it. Luhuitou Peak overlooks the city and is Sanya’s highest point. Sanya is nicknamed “China’s Hawaii.”

Land area:

It has an area of 1,919.6 square kilometers. With six gorgeous bays, it boasts gorgeous white sandy beaches and azure sea water. Several little islands are scattered off the coast.

Population:

The number of permanent residents reached 570,100 by the end of 2010. Of those, 182,272 live in the downtown area. People of Han, Li, Hui and Miao descent make up 99.3 percent of the population. Tourism peaks during the winter when many people come for the warm weather. Travelers from northern China are most common in the winter.

Climate:

Sanya has a tropical climate. The city is warm year round with an average annual temperature of 26.5 degrees Celsius. The temperature usually ranges from 15 to 21 degrees in December, January and February with little rain.

Ocean breezes make it seem cooler in the summer. Sanya receives an average of 2,400 hours of sunshine per year or about 6.5 hours per day.

August and September are very hot. The monsoon season is in the summer, when there is also a chance of typhoons. The heavy monsoon rains usually come in the afternoon, thus the rest of the day is often rather pleasant. Sanya receives an average of 1,826.5 millimeters of rain per year.

Language:

Mandarin. Few local people speak English fluently except for those working in luxury hotels.

Economy:

Sanya is a coastal city with tourism and real estate as the two pillar industries. Service industries, transportation, hotel, catering and related industries play an important role in Sanya’s economy.

History:

During the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907), the government banished rebel officers to Hainan, which became known as “the end of the earth” due to its remote location.

Food:

Sanya is famous for its fresh seafood. The amazing variety of flavors, aromas and textures of Chinese cuisine are a pleasure to the palate. Sea cucumber and abalone are common in restaurants while crab, lobster, mussels and all kinds of fish are readily available. Try coconut rice or coconut soup. Due to its tropical weather, Hainan is also great for a variety of exotic fruit including banana, lychee, coconut, dragon fruit, guava, pineapple, mango, papaya and longan.

Hainan cuisine is neither spicy nor sweet. Local chefs like to accentuate the original flavor of all ingredients, thus the cuisine is known for being light and fresh. Chinese wines go well with Hainan dishes. These wines are subtly different from each other and are worth sampling.

Travel tips:

Hire a reputable tour guide to organize transport, admission tickets and other things.

Ask local people to recommend some good seafood restaurants.

Tourists and local residents aged 16 or above can enjoy duty free shopping on imported items worth less than 8,000 yuan (US$1,300) before flying to other destinations within China.
