‘Freestyle’ traveler likes guesthouses

Michele Lyu

Nationality: Chinese

Profession/Title: Hospitality/Director of Public Relations of the Ritz-Carlton, Chengdu

My travel frequency: Every two months

My objective of travel: Get refreshed and recharged, both for business and leisure

My favorite traveling style: Freestyle. No specific agenda and plan. The most important is to try to live like a local every time in a new place.

When I finish a journey: I always feel recharged. I share the good moments with friends and family and plan for the next destination.

What travel means to my life is that it is a must. It’s one of my ways to balance work and life. An important moment to get out of daily work.

I travel alone sometimes but also love to travel with friends.

Q: What kind of hotel will you choose to stay in during a trip?

A: It depends on the destination. If it’s a small town, I’d rather stay at a guesthouse. (I use Airbnb a lot recently). The privilege to working in the hotel business is that we can enjoy the employee rate.

Q: What do you value most when choosing a hotel?

A: Cleanliness, location, safety and service.

Q: What facility or service do you think is necessary during a hotel stay?

A: In-room dining and concierge. Sometimes I come back late and would like to have a late dinner. Concierge is for people like me who never plan.

Q: What do you expect most of a hotel for an enjoyable stay?

A: The attention to details including both facilities and service. If a bellman welcomes guest with smile, if staff is willing to serve and be proactive... .

Q: What do you usually do in a hotel during your stay apart from resting in your room?

A: I go to swim most of the time when I travel.

Q: How do you book a hotel with an affordable room rate?

A: I work for the hotel business that helps me to enjoy a very good rate most of the time. If it’s not open, I’d rather stay at individual guesthouse.

Q: Share with us an unforgettable stay in a hotel.

A: The most unforgettable experience stay is at The Ritz-Carlton, Guangzhou early this year. From the moment I stepped out of the taxi, their staff welcomed me with smile.

There was one gentleman who guided me to my room, explained every single detail. It felt like home. He even put a chocolate amenity as a turn-down gift with a nice note to me.

Q: Any hotels are you looking forward to stay in the future?

A: The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel and New York Central Park

Q: What’s your favorite destination?

A: It was where my dream started and my career started. I studied and worked in Paris in 2007 as a trainee at a five-star luxury hotel in the Latin Quarter. Recently I went back and visited the places I used to work, talked with the colleagues and my friends there. It was good to see how much we grew during past years.

Q: What’s so special about it?

A: It was where my dream started, where I found the career I would love to pursue for my entire life, where I got to know the world.

Q: Any necessities you have to take when going to Paris?

A: A journal. I write a lot when I travel.

Q: What do you do upon arriving in Paris?

A: Get out of the hotel and find a brasserie to start Parisian life.

Q: Any places you have to visit or things you have to see when in Paris?

A: I love St. Germain a lot. I spend most of my time on the Left Bank,  where you can find coffees shops, universities, small markets and the park.

Q: Local specialties you must try?

A: The French bread and coffee

Q: What to buy as gifts in Paris for friends and family?

A: A lot. It depends on what you want to buy. Paris has everything: cosmetics, bags, luxury goods, arts and books.
