All set to fly to Guam

Q: What do you value most when choosing an airline?

A: A large and diverse route network with convenient scheduling, dependability and high level of in-flight service.

Q: What do you usually do on flight?

A: As the managing director of a major airline, I’m typically very busy and hardly have any time to myself. Flying gives me the luxury of being able to think a bit on my own without being distracted by others. I also, of course, like to relax.

Q: What do you think matters most for an airline?

A: Safety is clearly the highest priority, followed by enabling people to conveniently connect between distant points in a timely manner.

The quality of in-flight service matters a lot, and airlines must be constantly innovating and upgrading their offerings here, which is what we have been striving to do at United.

Q: What special customer requirements should an airline satisfy?

A: On long haul flights, comfort is crucial. United has accordingly invested in 180° lie-flat beds for its business and first-class passengers.

At the same time, we know that most of our non-business and non-first class customers love technology, so United has upgraded Wifi access on its airline fleet.

Q: How do you get the best deal on airfares?

A: Thanks to the Internet and mobile apps, today’s passengers have full transparency regarding all the available fares.

Tickets can be bought directly on www.united.com, on other travel sites, or, depending on the required services, through a travel agent, be it on- or offline.

Q: Share with us an unforgettable flight you had before.

A: I think my most unforgettable flight was my first one. It was a school field trip from New York City to San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was on Pan Am and it was fantastic to see the Manhattan skyline from the plane. It was a very exciting experience for a youngster.

Q: What’s your next destination?

A: I am flying on the B737-800 to Guam.

Q: Why are you going to Guam?

A: To mark the inauguration of our new direct non-stop flight service between Shanghai and Guam. United is the first airline to provide direct non-stop service between the island and the Chinese mainland.

Q: Is there anything special you do before flying to Guam?

A: Not really, the weather there is always beautiful, so there’s no need to pack special clothing, just something light, casual and comfortable.

Q: What do you do upon arriving in Guam?

A: Relax. If I’m in the mood, I’ll do a walk on one of Guam’s beautiful white-sand beaches.

Q: What places are worth visiting in Guam?

A: Aside from great beaches, Guam boasts impressively rugged mountain scenery, along with a wealth of shopping in its large, air-conditioned malls.

Q: What local specialties do you recommend?

A: Where to start? There’s red rice, a local staple for centuries, kelaguen, which is Guam’s equivalent to the Peruvian ceviche dish, great barbecue, kadon pika, a spicy stew, all of which can be topped off by tasty coconut candy.

Q: Share an unforgettable experience while on a trip to Guam.

A: Some of the great hiking in Guam and visiting the top of Two Lovers Point for the breathtaking view.

Q: What gifts do you buy in Guam?

A: Guam is a duty-free shopper’s paradise, but it will be something local.

Nationality: United States

Profession/Title: Managing Director for Greater China and Korea, United Airlines

How often do you travel?

I travel at least every other week and most of my travel is regional within Asia. I do also travel between Hong Kong and the USA about once a quarter.

Objective of travel:

Most of my travel is for business. The airline business is really a “people” business, so it is critical to get out and meet customers, team members and business partners on an ongoing basis. I also like to travel for leisure to meet new people, see incredible locations or just relax. Unfortunately, this is a small portion of my overall travel right now.

Favorite traveling style:

My favorite traveling style is by plane. When you think about how much aviation has changed the travel experience, it is really magical. Especially when considering travel between countries, it has really transformed the world and, to use a cliché, made the world a smaller place.

How many destinations have you already been?

It is a long list. Before working in the airline business, I worked in the oil industry. It allowed me to travel to some diverse locations, including most of the countries in South America, Egypt, Somalia, Tanzania and Oman. Of course, now I have the fabulous opportunity to get to see many places in China.

What does traveling mean to you?

It’s about learning and building new relationships.
