Harmony and geek chic

CHEN Chu splits her time between her hometown of Shanghai and Milan, Italy. She specializes in luxury jewelry and timepieces and works as a brand ambassador. She has embarked on a project to introduce Italian niche brands into the China market while also offering styling services to local customers.

My Personal Style is a fluid feminine touch in harmony with sophistication and glam. But above all, it is comfortable and fun. In my opinion, no matter how magnificent an outfit is, if it doesn’t make you feel comfortable, it is only a shell, an outfit covering a person.

I usually shop everywhere around the world. I fly between Europe and Asia every single month, have lived in Milan for over a decade. I know the Italian fashion capital by heart — every street, every brand name, location and every little hidden gem. I shop in Shanghai too. I love digging up hidden treasures in small shops in the former French concession area and finding unique items made with tradition.

The designer I most admire is Azzedine Alaia. Forever sassy and cool, he gives grace to the female form and has an unmistakable design personality.

My last wardrobe addition was a pair of YSL nude color stilettos. High skinny heels, warm nude patent leather perfect to match summer tanned legs and elongate the profile. And exceptional comfort wear, even though the heels are sky high. Shoes, even high heels, have to be comfortable to wear in my opinion.

My next fashion purchase will be a new customized python handbag in gun metal by the house of Zagliani. Zagliani’s exotic leather bags are my favorite with its special signature treatment to render the leather soft and resistant at the same time.

My favorite accessories are my bespoke jewelry pieces by Grimoldi Milano, an exclusive house of second-generation jewelry masters from the heart of Milan. Each piece is made from scratch. Great jewelry makes even plain outfits stand out and brings feminine elegance and glamour to a new level.

My grooming staple is Herborist (a Chinese cosmetic brand using mainly traditional Chinese herbal medicinal ingredients) for skin care, and Lierac for body care. My signature perfume is Comme des Garcons Luxe Champaca for winter and Acqua di Portofino for summer. They are not easy to find, usually I get the chance to buy Luxe Champaca when I pass through NYC, and Acqua di Portofino in a small sea town on the Italian coast.

The best thing about living in Shanghai is the feeling of living in a dynamic oriental metropolitan city with a deep European cultural influence. Walking home late at night from a movie on a tree-lined small boulevard in Shanghai, it feels like I’m in Paris.

Taiwan native Paris Kuo is the editorial director for Shanghai Morning Post Style Daily. Writing fashion columns daily, he follows the latest fashion trends while keeping his own style. Having won the Taipei Literature Prize, Kuo injects a sense of humor in his writing.

My personal style is “skate-ball” geek chic. For work I’m a suit man. For parties, I love to mix and match shirt and shorts, bow ties and skateboard shoes.

I usually shop at Lane Crawford, Cos and mrporter.com.

The designer I most admire is Dries van Noten. The Belgian designer’s eclectic prints and globe-trotting inspirations never disappoint me.

My most interesting outfit is an Issey Miyake indigo jacket I bought in 2000. I love it because it was a special arty collection crossover with Murakami Takashi, called “kaikaikiki.” The eyes pattern was also used by Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton two years later.

My best recent purchase was a pair of GGDB sneakers, I was attracted by the neon orange and silver colors. On the tongue of each show are the words “For skateboard use only. Not designed for other activities. GGDB property.” Well, sorry, I don’t go skateboarding but I really like these shoes.

My next fashion purchase will be a Kitsuné baseball jacket.

My grooming staple is to wash hair, face and body with the same herbal soap. I know that sounds a bit lazy but it’s really quick, and my skin is just perfect.

My signature perfume is L’Ombre Dans L’Eau — Eau de Parfum Eau by Diptyque, which recalls the rustling of petals and the leaves of bushes heavy with fruit in an English garden.

I want to visit Bali, Hawaii, Tahiti... every beach on the planet.

My most memorable destination is Florence, the City of Renaissance. I won’t forget those treasures in Uffizi and my summer by the swimming pool in the Four Seasons Firenze.

The best thing about living in Shanghai is the pointless conversations that make us laugh at the weekend brunch table.
