Beauty, bold statements at Fashion Week

OCTOBER was a busy month in Shanghai as designers debuted their spring/summer 2015 collections. Shanghai Fashion Week from October 15-22 featured more than 40 shows, with most presented by independent Chinese designers. Two brands from Italy, Alberta Ferretti and Giambattista Valli, also presented. Li Anlan and Yang Di report.

Jade en plus

Jade en plus’s collection this season is inspired by blossoms. The runway show titled “Rebirth” used grey pink and other subtle colors for a fresh look. The designer and brand founder, Tang Jia, applied digital designs and laser printing technology. The designs achieved a fluid effect by blending various materials like silk, organza and innovative materials.

Simon Gao

Designer Simon Gao presented his ready-to-wear collection, with the concept of unveiling the intuitive enchantment of women. The highlight is bringing sportswear element: cropped tops, wide pants and oversized pockets blended in modern design. Gao used black and white colors as well as various metallic tones, and developed the special material to accentuate the futuristic, high-tech spirit: organza with paper coating. He also added bright colored python as linear decorations for the urban sportswear.

Haizhen Wang

Presented as part of DONGLIANG’s One Day, Wang Haizhen showed his new designs featuring a breakthrough in using colors besides black and white. Wang used blue and red for this season’s collection, and incorporated patterns like tape and check in the simplistic style.

MF

German label MF, designed by Monika Figlewicz, presented its “Weightless Asymmetry” collection. Perfectly cut-shaped pieces in the brand’s signature black and white are designed for women with strong character and personal style. The collection combined materials such as silk, chiffon, wool, cotton and leather. The wearable pieces like poncho jackets, asymmetric skirt silhouettes and long caftan-style dresses are ideal for summer.

Helen Lee

Shanghai designer Helen Lee presented her show “Narcissist,” inspired by Greek mythology. Lee used narcissus flower elements throughout her runway show, including fragrance. The show itself was a social commentary reflecting “the selfie times.” Lee’s signature design featuring fluid lines and fresh colors brings distinctive elegance and youthful charm. The pieces are also easy to match.

Alberta Ferretti

Alberta Ferretti, a special guest during Shanghai Fashion Week, showcased its Forever 2015 bridal collection and an exclusive selection of evening gowns from the limited edition line. A tribe of bohemian nymphs in sheer barely pink colored gowns with petal applique walked the runway. Romantic styles boasted blooms of crochet florals and raggedy, leafy hemlines. The designer’s aim was to make women look and feel pretty. And of course, the bridal collection is the pinnacle of femininity.

Giambattista Valli Haute Couture

Giambattista Valli perfectly wrapped up the week at the Shanghai Exhibition Center with its Haute Couture No. 7, inspired by the freshness and exoticism of the Alhambra gardens in Spain. The collection focuses on the mix of Moorish and Spanish, expressed through colorful floral motifs and Arabesque-inspired pajamas stripes. Chinese top models including Liu Wen and Du Juan walked on the runway and became Giambattista Valli women for one night.
