Fresh sound keeps Gomez going

AMERICAN jazz giant Eddie Gomez is visiting Shanghai again. Having been to the city twice, this time he will perform at the JZ Shanghai Spring Festival at Shanghai Centre Theater on May 2.

Gomez will play music from his upcoming album “The New Age,” which features Li Xiaochuan on trumpet, Stefan Karlsson on piano and Billy Drummond on drums.

“This is the very first time that I made a record with a Chinese jazz musician. Many different traditions, cultures and personalities are creating a fresh sound,” Gomez says.

“The song selections will include jazz standards, original compositions and Chinese traditional music with jazz interpretation,” he says.

“Setting standards and bringing original music, we all come from strong traditions with respect to all of the great innovators before us. Our music has an exciting combination of tradition coupled with our own personality.”

During his 50-year career, Gomez has recorded as a leader for Columbia Records, Projazz and Stretch in addition to winning two Grammy awards.

Gomez has played alongside jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Gerry Mulligan and Benny Goodman, but is best known for his 11-year tenure with the Bill Evans Trio.

“Playing with Bill’s trio was perhaps the period where I grew the most, both as a musician and as a human being,” Gomez says.

Versatility

“By following his musical growth, Bill pushed me musically and inspired me to be a team player. He was an extremely genuine person who always played with such beauty, love and honesty. He was an incredible mentor for me,” he says.

Gomez is also known for his versatility — jazz, classical, Latin jazz, R&B, pop and contemporary music.

Gomez says he enjoys coming to Shanghai.

“I love the culture, the people and overall feeling here in Shanghai,” Gomez says. “It’s a very welcoming environment. I want the people to understand the music more, enjoy our performance and have a memorable music experience with us.

“The audiences here are great as always. I also see many young people attending jazz concerts. That is very important for the future of the jazz market in Shanghai.”

After the Shanghai concert, Gomez will tour North America to promote “The New Age.”

His show is part of the three-day JZ festival starting on April 30. A collection of talented Chinese and international jazz musicians will perform around the city.

Most of the performances will be free of charge.
