Rules have changed since 1950 inception

CHINA’S gaokao extra points policy has been divided into two periods. Before 1978, it adopted priority admission, while after 1978 the practice of bonus admission was implemented.

• 1950 — The education department required colleges and universities to lower the bar for revolutionary cadres and soldiers who had worked over three years, ethnic minority students and overseas Chinese students.

• 1956 — Detailed priority admission method was released for the three categories mentioned above: If they got the same or similar scores as other students, they had the priority in admission.

• After 1978 — Model students, academic competition winners and students with special skills in sports and arts replaced the previous categories to gain the priority policy.

• 1986 — Students who were the national second-level athletes could be enrolled with 20 points less.

• April 27, 1987 — Detailed priority items and extra points were released. Provincial “Model Student” winners, national youth technological innovation contest winners, international science and engineering competition winners, national second-level athletes could get no more than 20 extra points.

• End of 2010 — Adjustments were made on academic competition winners and students with special skills in sports. The “student by recommendation” system was abolished for national math and science contests winners. The priority items sports students enjoyed were reduced to only eight.
