Ban on Chinese tourists at Thai site just latest in series of incidents

THOUSANDS of Chinese tourists visiting Thailand during the past Chinese New Year holiday received a tourist manual in an effort to curb bad behaviors.

According to the Bangkok Post, Chinese tourists in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai have been the target of numerous complaints from locals who accuse the visitors of defacing several tourist attractions. As a result of improper behaviors, Chinese tourists were banned on February 3 from entering the White Temple, one of the top tourist destinations in Chiang Rai.

In January, photos of a Chinese woman drying her bra and panties on a chair at Chiang Mai’s airport created a storm online.

Thais are far from the only people unhappy with Chinese visitors. Over the past few years, some hotels and restaurants overseas were annoyed by Chinese tourists who liked to fill bags with food after eating. A sign in Chinese at Paris’ famed Louvre was found requesting that visitors not urinate on the museum grounds.

Here are some of other notorious incidents.

2012

In September, two drunken Chinese passengers had a brawl over seat arrangements on a Swiss International flight from Zurich to Beijing, forcing the aircraft to return. The Swiss Court ordered the troublemakers to pay up to three months’ worth of their salaries as a fine.

2013

In May, a 15-year-old boy was caught etching graffiti into Egypt’s ancient Luxor temple, writing “Ding Jinhao once visited here,” triggering great anger among Chinese people.

In October, many Chinese visitors occupied the lawn around the Tower of Pisa in Italy and some even had a picnic on the grass, disregarding the “No Entry” sign.

2014

In December, An AirAsia flight from Bangkok to Nanjing was forced to turn back after a spat between a Chinese couple and a flight attendant over the seat arrangement. The Chinese couple first complained about not being seated together. After the woman asked for hot water for her instant noodles, she suddenly hurled the scalding water at the flight attendant. The man beside her became enraged threatening to blow up the plane.
