Top MICE destinations around the world

SHANGHAI, China

As China’s main financial hub, Shanghai has a long-standing tradition of MICE business, which has continued to grow in the past few years.

Experts remain optimistic that Shanghai’s MICE industry will further improve with the opening of several new Metro stations and luxury hotels, especially the eagerly anticipated opening of the Shanghai Disney Resort. Shanghai is also benefiting from the upcoming G20 summit in Hangzhou. Some associated events have already been held in the city, such as the meeting of G20 finance ministers in February. Shanghai continues to gain influence by hosting celebrity product launches and building infrastructure and venues for its ever-increasing MICE industry.

Sydney, Australia

Sydney is firmly entrenched in the international MICE industry, offering diverse services and venues to accommodate all business travelers to Australia.

In fact, the very idea of travel that goes “beyond tourism” was conceived in Australia, so it only makes sense that Sydney, the cultural and economic capital of Australia, would be the vanguard of MICE tourism. The region offers two unique landscapes: pristine beaches and tropical rainforests. The city boasts world-class infrastructure and easy public transport, making it convenient for MICE guests to get to and from events. Sydney’s MICE experts also go above and beyond to establish a link between the “visitor economy” and the “knowledge economy” to cement their reputation as a premier location for meetings and conferences.

Japan

To spur its MICE industry growth, Japanese officials began to go against their traditional modest nature and vocally promote their country’s wealth of MICE resources from high-end venues to accommodations, transportation, and tourist destinations.

Like Thailand, Japan is also hoping to entice visitors out of big cities to other regions in the country. Industry experts hope these regions’ exotic scenery, sites, food, and cultural programs will provide the “new and exciting” factor to attract MICE guests from big cities. The Japanese MICE industry is also working hard to improve its ability to accommodate large groups. Japan is experiencing an uptick in infrastructure construction in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, which bodes well for the MICE industry.

Thailand

While Bangkok stays on top in terms of logistical ease for MICE groups, the MICE industry in Thailand is experiencing a noticeable shift to smaller cities around the country.

One such destination is the coastal city of Krabi, which has a wide range of hotels as well as fun activities on land and at sea. It appears that these activities are precisely what MICE groups want. Experts attribute the new preference for smaller cities to a desire for “new and fresh” experiences beyond the work-based environment. The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau and other MICE-related travel companies are offering incentives to attract guests to Thailand’s smaller MICE destinations, including subsidized flights and activity packages, excursions to organic farms, Thai cooking classes, and beach parties.
