Mandarin Oriental GM discusses MICE market

Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai is a luxury hotel offering a perfect combination of style, comfort and high-quality service. Shanghai Daily recently spoke with Pierre Barthes, general manager of the five-star hotel, to get a sense of the local MICE industry.

Q: It has been more than two years since your hotel first opened its door, how has the MICE business grown since then?

A: Our hotel is gradually building up an enviable reputation for delivering bespoke and memorable events to its MICE clients. As a result, we are very fortunate to have been recognized as one of the top choices in the city for prestigious meetings, exclusive parties and events, and stylish weddings.

What set us apart from the competition is our world-class facilities, unique design and the hotel’s resort-like setting in a city-center location underpinned by our legendary award-winning service. As the National (Shanghai) Center for Exhibition and Convention ramps up its business, coupled with other soon-to-be launched entertainment and infrastructure projects, the city will continue to grow in popularity as a world-class MICE destination.

Q: What is the most attractive part of Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai as a MICE hotel?

A: We offer an array of meeting and event facilities covering 1,928 square meters, including a 625-square-meter pillar free Grand Ballroom with a capacity to host 500 guests, a 325-square-meter Oriental Ballroom for 250 guests, plus eight versatile meeting rooms. Our lavish outdoor landscaped gardens provide an additional event option, and are ideal for glamorous social events, cocktail receptions and brand launches.

Further, Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai boasts the city’s largest presidential suite and luxury cruise options via its connected marina. Spanning 788 square meters and featuring 4.8-meter-high ceilings and 360-degree city views from the penthouse floor, our presidential suite is an in-demand setting for cocktails parties, product launches, private trunk shows and exclusive events for up to 50 guests. Also unique to our property is the Shanghai Metropolitan Marine Yacht Club at the hotel’s doorstep. Exciting private cruising options are available for high-end clientele under a partnership agreement.

On the service front, we believe the ability to offer a distinctive and memorable experience is the key to luring customers. At Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai, we are very fortunate to have a highly experienced events team that is able to cater to each client’s needs and seeks to deliver a flawless and memorable experience.

Another unique selling point is the versatility of our food and beverage venues, all of which boast outdoor seating for al fresco dining and are ideally suited for private events. Our culinary experts led by Richard Ekkebus, of the Michelin two-star Amber at The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong and Shanghainese celebrity chef Tony Lu, assure a truly memorable on-site and off-site catering service capable of hosting events of 10 all the way up to 2,000 persons.

Q: Have you made any improvements to your MICE facilities recently? Do you have any plans to further sharpen your competitiveness in this segment?

A: We have many plans in place to ensure that we stay competitive against our peers. Our team conducts post-event guest satisfaction surveys by sending a questionnaire to each and every meeting planner. Their feedback is shared with all related departments as a source of opportunity and improvement. It is a very important instrument in ascertaining their perceptions of our hotel. Timely follow-up and proactive interaction also helps turn these meeting planners into repeat guests.

Q: How would you describe the overall performance of Shanghai’s MICE market this year? Have you noticed any new industry trends?

A: The Shanghai government’s efforts to carve out a niche for MICE tourism is starting to pay huge dividends. Rapid development in MICE facilities and the hotel sector are helping Shanghai become a venue of choice for trade fairs, exhibitions, incentives and conferences — with better price points compared with other regions.

The boom of free trade zones — represented by the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone — has stimulated commercial development in the region, which has a knock-on effect on the MICE business.

To the extent that Shanghai continues to stay relevant while being different in its offerings we are very confident about the MICE sector’s long-term prospects.
