Employees do Shangri-La proud

The twin-tower luxury hotel, prominently situated in the heart of Lujiazui, Pudong New Area, is targeting revenue growth of between 15 and 20 percent from its MICE operations in 2015.

“The past 2014 was a great year for the hotel with our MICE business registering a year-on-year revenue increase of 28 percent,” Clarke, a hospitality veteran who took over in late 2013, told Shanghai Daily. “We are also off to a great start this year with a very strong first quarter.”

MICE food and beverage covers at the hotel jumped 28 percent last year while room nights booked by MICE guests rose 15 percent from 2013, according to the general manager.

Taking the hotel’s size into consideration, the growth was impressive and this year’s target seems aggressive.

With 577 rooms in the classic River Wing and 375 rooms in the contemporary Grand Tower, the riverfront property boasts the largest hotel room inventory in Shanghai. Meeting space at the hotel’s two buildings — 22 function rooms with two ballrooms — is also unparalleled among its competitors with banquet and meetings venues, both indoor and outdoor, totaling 8,300 square meters. The Grand Ballroom and China Hall, the hotel’s two pillar-less ballrooms, are able to accommodate 1,500 and 1,700 guests respectively for cocktail receptions.

With two main entrances at two towers, two front desks and dedicated group check-in areas, what Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai focuses on is the delivery of a truly luxury experience to its guests without necessarily making them feel the size of the hotel.

In the hotel’s latest hardware upgrade, function spaces on Level 2 and Level 3 in the River Wing were given a face-lift. Carpets and tapestry were replaced and LED lights were installed to save energy and help protect the environment.

Apart from improving the hotel’s facilities, service has remained a constant to developing loyal customers.

“Our themed coffee breaks, initiated by our creative food and beverage teams, have received very positive feedback from the customers since they hit the market at the beginning of this year,” Clarke said. “With these innovative breaks, guests will be able to try a different and memorable experience while their minds are rejuvenated at the same time.”

Housing 10 cutting-edge designer restaurants, bars and lounges, Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai, runs the largest international culinary team in Shanghai with 400 staff among which 220 are dedicated chefs. Culinary professionals from 10 countries are bringing their wealth of expertise to present guests from around the world authentic gourmet experiences.

A well-versed and loyal hotel team has also helped Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai, establish a solid reputation as an upscale address for MICE activities. Half of the hotel’s more than 1,300 staff have been working with the hotel for more than five years, said Clarke, who views them as a great asset to the hotel.

“Loyal employees are certainly a benefit to customers because they understand better what our guests expect,” Clarke said. “We have developed comprehensive training programs for our staff and are able to provide career development opportunities not only within our hotel but also with our two sister properties in the city.”

Since the opening of the River Wing in 1998, Pudong Shangri-La has built a strong track record over the years in exceeding guest expectations.

The hotel is renowned for hosting big events and has an excellent reputation as the city’s premier offsite catering choice. Its diverse culinary team is very mobile and can cater up to 2,000 people offsite comfortably.
