Disney surrounded by can’t-miss attractions

THE eagerly anticipated opening of Shanghai Disneyland is fast approaching, and many local residents are chomping at the bit to experience the magical kingdom for themselves.

While the Disney Resort has plenty of attractions to satisfy visitors of all ages, the area around the resort is also teeming with a variety of picturesque sites and exciting venues that are worth checking out. Shanghai Daily has visited the area and compiled a list of its can’t-miss destinations.

Shanghai Wild Animal Park

The 153-hectare Shanghai Wild Animal Park is only a short jaunt away from the Disney Resort. The park includes a Ferris wheel and other rides — but, of course, the real attractions are the animals.

The park boasts over 200 species of animals from around the world, including some rare breeds that are almost impossible to see in the wild. The park’s various zones include a giant panda hall, golden monkey hall, parrot house, white lion area, white tiger area, ostrich zone, kangaroo zoo, crocodile island, a flamingo exhibition area, young animal garden, waterfowl lake and a bird garden. The park also offers safaris for guests who want to get up close to the animals. Staff will drive guests around an open area where animals roam freely, using food to lure them closer to the vehicles. If the park has baby tigers and lions, guests have the option to hold and take photos with them. In addition, guests can participate in feedings with kangaroos, fish and giraffes. They can also join play time with the lemurs and ride elephants.

The park features daily animal shows, featuring a number of trained animals performing tricks, and races involving dogs, camels, ostriches and Mongolian horses.

Moreover, Yi Ou Lai has a large selection of high-quality restaurants featuring various culinary delights from all corners of the world. If shopping is not your cup of tea, the shopping center’s open-air layout was designed with an eye for pedestrian shoppers, so just strolling around promises to be a pleasing experience.

Ecological Green Park

After you’ve indulged your inner child on Disney’s many roller coasters, rides and attractions, the nearby Ecological Green Park offers guests a peaceful respite from the high-energy theme park experience.

The park is located in the northeast corner of the Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone, not far from the Disney Resort. The park allows guests to walk amongst fragrant flower beds and aromatic herb gardens, and enjoy the simple beauty of the park’s natural landscape. The verdant green is interspersed with lounge areas where guests can rest, as well as recreation sites for enjoying sports and other outdoor activities. For burgeoning botanists, the park is also home to several 100-year-old gingko trees, which stand as markers of the land’s natural history.
