All that jazz — and stunning city views
A leisure evening with friends and family is not complete without live performances. From heart-touching jazz to thrilling martial arts, the city’s top bars and restaurants not only serve fine food and cocktails, but also exciting performances.
Here are some of the hotel bars and restaurants offering memorable shows.
Jazz Bar, Fairmont Peace Hotel
For locals, the performance by the Shanghai Old Jazz Band at the Jazz Bar is irreplaceable. Here, the glory of jazz from the 1930s hasn’t faded.
Founded by Zhou Wanrong on December 24, 1980, the Shanghai Old Jazz Band and its six veteran musicians made jazz a way of life, telling the stories of the city and the people.
Zhou joined the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in 1952 and was the principal trumpeter before retiring in 1980. He also played with various jazz musicians at the old Paramount Ballroom before joining the symphony orchestra.
The band has traveled around the world with the sound of Shanghai. German filmmaker Uli Gaulke made a documentary “As Time Goes By” that followed the Shanghai Old Jazz Band’s performances from 2011 to 2012, including the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. They’ve also released CDs in the past.
Today, the Jazz Bar, as an institution and representation of Shanghai culture, still retains its original repertoire, performing tunes like “Ye Lai Xiang” (Fragrance of the Night) and “Ye Shang Hai” (Shanghai Night) in the rustic English style bar.
The bar serves timeless cocktails inspired by the jazz age, among which are the Conte Verde, Puss Month, the Champion martini and San Remo.
