World-famous Russian State Ballet presents new version of ‘The Nutcracker’

A rare treat is being served up for fans of classical dance when the Russian State Ballet is coming to Shanghai during the National Day holiday to present its very own version of Tchaikovsky’s world-renowned “The Nutcracker.”

The two-act ballet, adapted from E.T.A Hoffmann’s story, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” made its debut in 1892 and since then has had 10 different adaptations.

The performance takes audiences into the realms of fantasy where a girl meets a toy nutcracker, who comes to life and leads her away on an adventure into a magical kingdom.

Gordeev Viacheslav, director of Russian State Ballet, was a renowned ballet artist in his day.

Russian audiences hailed his performances as the Nutcracker Prince. Over the past few decades, he has dedicated his life and training into the education and cultural exchanges of ballet art.

“The Nutcracker” is an appealing story with rich elements of humor and fantasy for the whole family.
