The delights of a trendy Turkish hotspot

HAVING opened for three weeks, expats and trendy locals alike seem to have embraced Pera, a Turkish/Mediterranean restaurant on weekdays and a lively Turkish bar over the weekends.

There are tasty reasons to give this place a try. Pera is one of the few restaurants and bars that have been opening up in Found 158, considered to be the next dining destination.

Unlike its brother restaurant, Pasha, that opened its doors in 2009 on Nanchang Road, Pera offers more than the traditional meat fare Pasha is famous for.

Seafood is the focus, with the recipes coming from a small Aegean island of Bozcaada in Turkey.

Pera will introduce you to the variety of delicious Turkish delights.

I began my dinner with an array of mezes.

Among them, cacik (tzasiki), hummus and atom made for delicious dips and each contains a mixture of herbs and spices, combined with garlic and olive oil.

The hummus was a bit dry yet the atom was perfectly made of hot red pepper and strained yoghurt.

Levrek Marine was recommended as one of the recipes from western part of Turkey. The tender sea bass was served in a special mustard lemon sauce.

The flavor was not bold as the use of spices is less in the west.

Another Mediterranean delight was the octopus salad served with pickles, dill, lemon and olive oil.

Following up on the many small plates, the special mixed kebab platter was presented on the table. A Turkish staple, meat lovers simply can’t resist the perfectly charred high-quality beef, lamb and chicken kebab. The meat is seasoned with special herbs and spices so the flavor is simply special in its own right. If you prefer seafood, you can opt for Turkish style grilled seabass. The prices are reasonable given the quality of the food.

Don’t forget order Raki, Turkey’s national drink also known as Lion’s Milk. Made of distilled grapes and aniseed, the taste is similar to ouzo from Greece and pastis from France. Raki is always consumed with chilled water. If you don’t like the taste, you’re highly recommended to order a glass and join the happy crowd.

Opening hours: 4pm-2am (Monday-Friday); 11am-2am (weekends)

Average price: 200 yuan

Address: B1/F, 158 Julu Rd

Tel: 6333-3758
