Starbucks goes green with ‘cups of love’

Every small effort counts when it comes to building a greener earth.

Starbucks launched the 2015 Earth Day My Starbucks Rewards card set last Friday. It consists of a card made using environmentally friendly material with a reusable, light and portable tumbler.

The white cup made with environmentally friendly plastic encourages customers to bring their own tumblers when visiting Starbucks, a top priority in the company’s strategy to reduce waste.

Last year alone, 1.5 million paper cups were saved in China, thanks to customers who brought their own cups.

Since 1985, Starbucks has been offering a small discount to customers using their own cups around the world. In China it’s a 2 yuan discount.

Also in response to World Wildlife Fund’s global movement Earth Hour, every Starbucks coffee shop on the Chinese mainland turned off some lights on March 28 from 8:30pm to 9:30pm in the evening.

During the hour, baristas hosted small coffee tasting events in stores with customers and shared ideas of living a greener life, including how to use leftover coffee grounds.

Customers joining the tastings also received a small bag of coffee grounds in thanks for their efforts to be more environmentally friendly.

Starbucks will also host a series of events to raise public awareness about protecting the environment throughout its Earth Month campaign.

Commitment to environmental conservation has long been an important part of Starbucks’ social responsibilities. The comprehensive approach to reduce its impact on the environment is reflected in every aspect of the business.

In 2009, the company launched an earth friendly platform comprising ethical sourcing, an environmental promise and giving back to the community. The promise is extended to coffee growers, the environment and community through responsible operation and management.

For Starbucks, sourcing coffee is not simply buying from the suppliers, but investing in the future sustainable development of the industry. The company’s climate strategy initiated in 2004 focuses on renewable energy and energy conservation, as well as climate adaptation and mitigation efforts.

Starbucks has built more energy-efficient stores and facilities, conserving the energy and water used, doing its best to reduce the environmental footprint left by business operations.

The designs of coffee shops reflect the character of a store’s surrounding neighborhood and help reduce environmental impact at the same time.

In the past year, Starbucks employees in Shanghai, and Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces contributed more than 37,000 hours of volunteer community service, connecting with customers and community residents in building a better life.

Starbucks employees are also proud of the company’s environmental approach.

“When a customer takes a cup of coffee from my hand, he has already joined our team in protecting and loving the earth,” said Jessie, a partner at the company. “Every one of us is connected with the customers through cups of coffee.”

Every time when savoring a cup of Starbucks latte or mocha from your own travel tumbler, remember what that drink is worth. A small forest can be saved by not using paper cups.

Join Starbucks this spring and show a “cup of love” to mother earth.
