Shake & Bubbles party brings night of nostalgia

FILM posters on the wall, familiar old songs and videos, old-fashioned décor and interesting lane games brought guests back to the 1970s and 80s. The Shake & Bubbles party — Fleet of Time last Thursday at Renaissance Pudong Hotel was like a time machine giving a nostalgic experience to guests, helping them remember their childhood life.

The party in the ballroom on the fourth floor was uniquely designed to create a casual, fun and relaxing night for guests, who were required to dress in 1970s and 80s clothing, such as a sailor’s striped shirt, plaid skirt and school uniform. To the sound of marching songs that used to be played during morning exercises at school, guests walked into the room. There they were excited to see many familiar scenes, such as an old trolley, a Super Mario Brothers game seen on the “Nintendo family computer,” and many table and lane games.

“Renaissance is all about discovery but this evening we would like our guests who come from Shanghai to rediscover their childhood games and our overseas guests to discover something new about Shanghainese culture,” says Paul Gill, general manager of the Renaissance Pudong Hotel. “We have a range of games from different eras and it is very nice to see the people excited about playing games from their childhoods. We encourage them to take a trip down memory lane.”

This evening there were 16 different games from rubber band skipping, hopscotch to marbles and caroms and as the guests progressed around the room they could get stamps for successfully completing each one. The people with the most stamps could compete for a prize. After all of this activity, the guests could eat a selection of authentic old fashioned food such as borscht, deep-fried pork chops, jellied bean curd, and noodles mixed with scallions, oil and soy sauce served in metal lunch boxes and enamel bowls to get the real feeling and taste of yester year.

“In a way, the theme of this evening reflects the Renaissance Pudong which has been well established in the area for many years. With our renovation of the guests room almost complete, we invite our guests to rediscover the true feeling of hospitality found at Renaissance Pudong,” Gill adds.

He explained that moving forward Shake & Bubbles will change slightly and will be arranged by brand in the future which will give the guests a real immersion into each of the brands represented in Shanghai.

“We bring the food from people’s childhood and allow them to have a warm home feeling back to the days,” says Erwin Sikkenga, food and beverage director of the hotel. “We want all of our guests to go home with smiles, warm feelings of childhood, food and memories. No matter how old we get, we were young once.”
