Savor the British classic at The Langham

THE Langham Xintiandi Shanghai has added a brand new Wedgewood teaware to its signature afternoon tea at Cachet Lobby Lounge. It is a combination of two British classics that honors tradition while providing a luxury teatime experience.

The elegant and beautifully crafted bone chinaware with English rose pattern is an exclusive Wedgewood collection for The Langham.

Josiah Wedgewood (1730-1795) founded the Wedgewood in 1759. The English potter and industrialist revolutionized the pottery industry from just artisans’ craftsmanship into factory production.

The company has successfully maintained its reputation for quality and design for more than two centuries. It also holds the prestigious Royal Warrant as supplier of giftware and tableware for Her Majesty the Queen.

The Palm Court at Langham, London is known as the birthplace of afternoon tea. The history of this British tradition dates back to 1865, when Anna Maria Stanhope, the 7th Duchess of Bedford and a lady-in-waiting to the queen, created the afternoon tea when she began to invite friends to join her for light meals to fill the gap between lunch and dinner.

The Cachet Lobby Lounge serves traditional British afternoon tea everyday from 2pm to 5pm. The classic three-tier set presents a diverse selection of both savory and sweet snacks. The current new menu that was released just last month includes both traditional afternoon tea staples as well as creative dishes.

The cucumber, ham and cheese sandwich, seasonal fruit tartlet and red velvet cake made from original recipe are iconic must-haves of British afternoon tea. At the same time, there’s also creative new ones like the miniature brioche topped with tear drop tomato tartar, small “sardinillas del cantabrico” and Mache baby green salad or the seared and marinated scallop on savory sable with wakame seaweed and salmon roe.

“Everything is homemade, every single thing in the afternoon tea are made in house,” said culinary director Albert Servalls. “We aim to use the best quality product available in the market.”

The chocolate cup cake is made with Valrhona dark chocolate and the petit croissant sandwich is made with 40-month “Iberico” boar ham.

Servalls is also proud of the freshly baked scones at Langham, which are served warm with homemade clotted cream, bitter orange and strawberry marmalade.

The afternoon tea also includes a choice of coffee or a glass of champagne or Pink Muscat.

Afternoon tea is best enjoyed with friends. The combination of premium teaware and snacks made with top-notch ingredients is certainly hard to pass by.

“It is an experience, from the music to the setting of an iconic hotel,” Servalls said. “It is the best one, no doubt, and you can enjoy a beautiful afternoon tea in iconic Xintiandi.”
