Pantone names soothing shade Color of the Year
THE topsy-turvey year that just ended has left many craving a sense of refreshment and revitalization; two qualities captured perfectly by the color green. With this in mind, Pantone has selected Greenery as its Color of the Year for 2017.
“While Serenity and Rose Quartz, the Pantone Color of the Year 2016, expressed the need for harmony in a chaotic world, Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the hope we collectively yearn for amid a complex social and political landscape,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color institute, during a recent press conference in Shanghai.
“Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate, revitalize and unite, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”
This desire for more green comes in part from the fact that the more submerged people are in modern realities, the greater their innate craving to immerse themselves in the physical beauty and inherent unity of the natural world. Color expert Eiseman said this sentiment is reflected by the proliferation of all things expressive of Greenery in our daily lives; from urban planning and architecture to lifestyle and design choices. Greenery is an omnipresent hue around the world.
According to Eiseman: “The tangy yellow-green speaks to our desire to express, explore, experiment and reinvent, imparting a sense of buoyancy. Through its reassuring yet assertive vibrancy, Greenery offers us self-assurance and boldness to live life on our own terms, during a time when we are redefining what makes us successful and happy.”
Though the craving for green in daily life comes from a deep psychological need, the color is also an attention-getting shade when used in fashion and graphic design.
Green is nature’s neutral, a great harmonizer merging undertones of cool blues with vibrant yellows. It’s a natural complement to a wide range of palettes.
In the fashion world, the zesty shade has popped up on recent collections from Kenzo, Zac Posen, Michael Kors, Cynthia Rowley, Shiatzy Chen and others. Several brands have also opted for a deeper slant on the color. Major fashion and accessory labels have used green in different ways, either monochromatically for a strong impact or more subtly for a revitalizing vibe. The color has also been used in a variety of solids and prints in children’s wear.
“In the field of architecture and home décor, we’ve seen the common use of botanically-themed walls and prints in public spaces, hotels to residentials. Open spaces in interior and exterior design and floor-to-ceiling windows also allow the green outdoors to become part of a room’s backdrop and ambience,” said Eiseman.
