New menu at Pizza Express doesn’t disappoint

PIZZA Express, formerly known by the moniker Pizza Marzano, has undergone many changes in the past few years, changing everything from their name to their menu. The new spring and summer menu features a variety of new ingredients and localized selections for a unique menu with a mix of fresh, traditional Mediterranean favorites and Italian fusion dishes that will delight taste buds.

The new menu not only features fresh produce, it also has a wide selection of thirst-quenching fresh-pressed juices. The new menu couples classic Italian favorites with other types of Western cuisine, like a selection of “American Hot” pizzas, with a peppery mix of spicy ingredients from around the globe, as well as classics like chicken wings.

But to appeal to Chinese palates, localization is the name of the game when it comes to the new menu. Pizza Express is using specifically Chinese ingredients in some of its dishes — like the new Char Sui pizza.

This pie is the brainchild of Chef Rahim, who traces his roots back to the Guangdong region of China, where his grandmother was born. One of Rahim’s fondest childhood memories is eating his grandmother’s char sui, delectable slices of pork roasted with honey.

During a recent dinner, Pizza Express met my expectations. I enjoyed several starters to get my appetite revved up.

The carpaccio di salmone affumicato was a heady mixture of smoked fish and rich olive oil, garnished with radish and citrus.

The chicken wings were doused in barbecue sauce and herbs and the rustica tomatoes added the perfect hint of light, fresh acidity to the smorgasbord. This was perfectly accompanied by a fruity glass of pinot grigio, pressed from organic grapes grown in Veneta, Italy.

For the main courses, I crunched my way through the crisp, leafy beef steak and pickle salad, a mix of fresh greens, veggies, beef, pesto, and lemon sauce. My personal favorite was the lava pizza, with fluffy dollops of Burrata cheese, which is made fresh every day at Pizza Express.

The final course was a heaping portion of Eaton Mess, a quintessential English dish, with meringue, whipped cream, pistachios, and strawberries.

While the new dishes spice up Pizza Express’s menu, all your old favorites are still available. But if your favorite dish has really been taken off the menu, you can just ask the kitchen if they have the ingredients and they’ll be happy to prepare it for you.
