Massive rock band lineup in underground
THIS weekend the stars are aligned, or tides are in sync: It must be because there’s a heck of a lot going on. How much? Too much. You’re going to miss some because you can’t do it all. That shouldn’t stop you from trying.
Here’s what’s happening in the Shanghai underground.
Tomorrow the Mongolian folk band Hanggai plays Mao Livehouse. I’m obligated to write about this show, despite some deep philosophical differences with this folk-influenced hard rock band.
Still, the band from the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region puts on a show that gets international attention and a strong local following.
If you want to see a Chinese band before they potentially break big in the West, this might be the one. Their new album is coming out, and word on the street is it’s a doozy.
On Saturday, two rock shows compete.
It’s a big night at the dive Harley’s, with four bands. Local sax meets hardcore band Round Eye; punk-tinged metal act Hujia Huwei meets “doomsday rock” band Bedstars from Beijing, and punkers The Bennies from Melbourne, Australia.
This is going to be a big, fast, heavy show. Expect some moshing. Round Eye will tour North America over the summer, so there’s only a little time to see them and help them raise some dough.
Meanwhile, at Yuyintang there’s indie rock trio Hedgehog from Beijing and the Beijing via Shanghai songwriter Little Punk. Apologies for any sexist connotations, but this is going to be a cute show.
Little Punk and Hedgehog drummer Atom are both wildly charismatic girls — and don’t weight 200 lbs between them.
Their doll-like looks are only outdone by their massive talent.
On Sunday, the Mao Fest will take over Mao Livehouse with two stages of acts.
The lineup is massive, with 13 bands of most local Chinese stalwarts, including Forget and Forgive, Zina Punx, and Chao Mind. A variety of acts, mostly on the rock side.
