Lots of beer, music, food at fest

THE fourth Shanghai International Beer Festival (SIBF) will kick off at the Cool Docks next Thursday, featuring more than 200 international beer brands spread over 50 booths from 26 countries and regions, as well as over 40 food vendors representing more than 18 countries.

The 4-day carnival will also feature more than 20 of Shanghai's best DJs, acrobats and two groups of dancers.

“This is the fourth beer festival I’ve been involved in, and it’s been very exciting to watch it grow. This year it’ll be bigger and better than ever,” says Brian Offenther, the festival’s music and media director.

The stage will feature performers and acrobats dancing to the music, “which will make it a very dynamic experience,” he promises.

The fourth edition will be preceded by the Shanghai International Beer Festival Week, which is new this year. Ten days before the festival, there are different beer-related events across the city. Included will be microbrewery visits, beer and food-matching classes, home-brewing workshops, beer discounts and brews made especially for the festival.

“This is the first time SIBF is held for four days, so we’re able to bring in new DJs that haven’t played the festival before, as well as old favorites like DJ Skinny Brown and Verse@ille,” says Offenther.

The soundtrack will be provided by Shanghai DJs including Conrank (Rankadank crew), DJ Verse@ille (In the Trap) and Skinny Brown (Papasuda).

“The idea is to have a DJ lineup that matches the international character of the beer festival,” says Offenther. “A variety of styles, from rock to trap to hip-hop, will be featured every night, keeping things exciting for the progressive audience SIBF aims to attract. We hope to have a DJ lineup that will makes the crowd dance so much they'll spill their beer — almost.”

Meanwhile, the outdoor dance floor will be a completely immersive experience. In front will be the DJ stage; above, flying acrobatic dancers will perform air ballet suspended from cables.

And since the SIBF will overlap with Halloween, festival-goers can expect some special, spooky surprises.

The SIBF has shown consistent growth in each of its three iterations, satiating a public thirsty for a well-crafted international beer experience.

“Between revolutionizing expectations toward entertainment with our new immersive music experience and new inroads toward the industry with Brewnetwork China, the 4th Shanghai International Beer Festival will prove to be beyond just beer,” says Theminh Nguyen, general manager of Bevex, the organizer of the event.
