Enjoy sumptuous Italian in home-like setting

SOMETIMES choice can be a burden. In the intimate dining room on the second floor of Salotto G, chef Giulioantonio di Sabato takes the choice out of dining with his own menu of Italian fare prepared with a modern twist.

The exclusive casual-luxe dining room features an open kitchen where Sabato prepares delicate plates before the eyes of his guests.

Salotto G was envisioned as a warm, cozy living-room-style venue where friends could come together over a delicious meal. The interior looks out on leafy Wuding Road, home to one of Shanghai’s most bustling restaurant-and-bar neighborhoods.

The upstairs dining room is where one can taste a creative chef’s menu planned by Sabato.

My own dining experience started with a refreshing glass of proseco, followed by the starter: foiegras terrine on spiced bread, served with figs, grape jelly and balsamic pearls. The delightful course tells a story through taste: first you’re hit by the silken richness and sublime taste of the liver terrine, then the mild sweetness of the grape jelly, and finally the complex tangy-sweet flavors of a balsamic vinegar that lingers on the tongue.

The next course — King prawns, ricard and bell peppers — was delicious, but the highlight was the first main course, Pacchern filled with baked cod, in tomato broth flavored with black olives, dried tomato and marjoram. It had a real Italian taste that brought out the natural flavors of each ingredient. The tomato broth was just divine.

I was blown away by the dessert Ovis Mollis and liquorices sauce, mango ice cream and physalis; a perfectly balanced sweet to wrap up dinner.

The chef’s table menu is priced at 488 yuan (US$73.20) per person without wine pairing. With wine included, the price goes to 688 yuan.

The good thing about Salotto G is that they meet the different expectations of Italian food lovers. If the chef’s menu is not your thing, the first-floor lounge offers an intimate space for a relaxing aperitif or casual fare.

Some signature items include Gnocchi alla Romana, Pinsa di G and Risotto di G. And don’t forget to taste their classic yet creative cocktails: Farmer Old-Fashion, Bellisima oh! and Mr. G.

Cocktails are buy-one-get-one-free daily between 6pm and 8pm.
