Eco design fair urges small, positive steps

DOZENS of eco-friendly brands, stores, services and community groups will come together with the public this weekend at the 6th annual Shanghai Eco Design Fair at Gongyi Xintiandi.
The Saturday and Sunday activities include an eco-marketplace, farmer’s market, educational workshops, green walks, a bike ride on Sunday morning, and on-site blood drive organized by the Shanghai Blood Center.
Around 15,000 visitors are expected at the event themed “Air and Quality Life.”
There will be live music, performances and local food.
“Instead of focusing on the problems of air pollution or how bad the air quality is, we want to focus on the positive and be proactive in taking back what is essential a better quality life and clean air,” says fair founder Sherry Poon.
The fair aims to show people how to change the immediate quality of life by taking small, simple and positive steps.
Participants include designers, various entrepreneurs, NGOs and other organizations dedicated to encouraging a green, environmentally friendly lifestyle.
More than 75 eco-friendly brands exhibiting at the event include Cedar Essentials, myLOHAS, Biolan, Brut Cake, and Jonas Design and more. All the products on sale are sustainably made and can be recycled.
“Don’t forget to bring you own water bottle, cutlery and reusable shopping bags,” says Poon.
Organic-certified produce from local farmers will be available at the Fresh Foods Farmer’s Market and Chef’s Corner.
Award-winning hotel chefs will prepare dishes with diverse, seasonal and nutritious produce.
Three green walks will take place, including a sustainability walk in the former French concession, a heritage walk around the Old Town, and Talk & Walk around Gongyi Xintiandi.
“The walk is less about a route and more about a story line based on four Chinese characters — clothing, eating, housing, mobility — that summarize basic human livelihood,” says Liu Yi, organizer of the sustainability walk.
Along the way, various sights and activities will trigger discussion about environmental issues, sustainable living and consumption choices. The event is about “green challenges and behavior,” Liu says.
Children of all ages will have plenty to do at the Eco Kids Corner where they can join various crafts workshops and learn to make a sustainable kite, and fly it.
