Dance punk band !!! plans electric show

AMERICAN dance punk band !!! (pronounced “chk chk chk”) is pumped to be on their way to Shanghai and they expect to bring the house down on August 28 at Mao Livehouse.

“We’ve toured one year already with our new album ‘Thr!!!er.’ Right now we are an oiled machine and ready to kill it. We want to give the Shanghai crowd a show they haven’t seen before. Bring out your dancing shoes and come and rock with us,” band members tell Shanghai Daily in an e-mail interview.

While the Shanghai gig won’t be as big as stadium concerts, frontman Nic Offer says that’s not an issue for the band.

“We can enjoy every show, playing for 30,000 people or playing for 400 kids is exactly the same. When the crowd digs it, it’s just amazing to play,” he says.

Talking about the upcoming show in Shanghai, their debut performance in China, the band says: “We always wanted to play China and see new places. We are much stoked that we can finally play Shanghai. We are looking forward to see what China is like.”

Offer adds, “it will be only a brief visit because we will play all over Asia, but all of us are super excited to check out some stuff in Shanghai.”

The former band members of The Yah Mos, Black Liquorice and Popesmashers came together in the mid 1990s and formed !!!.

“We really started working on songs in the summer of 1995. We went on tour together in 1995 and got along very well. After that tour we started jamming together and wanted to play some different music,” says Offer, who helped light the fuse of the millennial dance-punk scene and has managed to stick around long after it burned out.

Since their formation, !!! has stood out as freewheeling party monsters radiating sunny vibes. The band continues making new fans all over the world and making music together.

The band says they don’t like to push themselves in one particular direction when it comes to music.

“What we can say is that we hope that our music makes everybody want to dance,” they add.

Offer says they are not worried about labels such as punk or alternative and admits their sound has evolved since they first started.

The band’s influences include the psychedelic scene from the 1970s, 1980s disco and electro kraut rock from the early 1990s.

Offer says writing songs and lyrics can happen anywhere at any time.

“Sometimes when I just wake up I have a thing in my mind that I want to write down. If we are all together and making songs I will go and see in my little book what lyric fits with the vibe of the song,” he says.

The one constant !!! fans can expect is more change. Offer says as they live and grow, each member picks up new influences and ideas that change their music.
