Comparing China’s high wine tariff

CHINA’S mainland

Tariff on bottled wine is 14%. Added are a 10% consumption tax and 17% VAT.

All are applied to the CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) price, bringing total tax to 48.2%.

Import duty on bulk wine is 20%.

Hong Kong

No import duties.

Singapore

A rate formula is applied to all alcohol imports.

Duty = Quantity in liters X S$88 X percent of alcohol strength (proof)

Example: 100 liters 19% proof Port wine. Duty = 100 X S$88 X 0.19 = S$1,672 (US$1,335)
