Chinese designers make waves

Despite China’s importance in the global luxury and fashion markets, a new breed of homegrown and internationally educated design talents has been gradually reshaping the country’s fashion scene. They are now taking their concepts to other markets.
Most of them have lived and created their brand concepts between China and the West and have a passion to translate their rich cultural heritage into something new.
Here are some of the noteworthy names that have started to change the image of “Made in China.”
by Fang
Fashion designer Yang Fang founded by Fang in 2008 and the label is infused with the adventurous spirit of a cosmopolitan designer who built a life in Paris and found inspiration by looking at her roots from a contemporary, multicultural point of view.
Yang’s longtime passion for origami has blossomed into an essential component of by Fang’s designs and are now a signature.
Her spring/summer 2015 collection explores the quintessential expression of life; it sparkles with a fresh, blossoming attitude, whole-heartedly engaged in its promise of feminine elegance and fun.
Floral patterns and hand-crafted petals give a natural, original twist to the sophisticated metropolitan design to reveal a woman’s true and accomplished spirit.
Silk organza, crepe and delicate lightweight cotton embrace urban silhouettes and flowing pleated dresses. An alluring mix of patterns, dots, stripes and wearable transparency plays in harmony with by Fang’s signature origami-inspired detailing and flourishing finesse.
Luvon by Liu Lu
Beijing-born fashion designer Liu Lu left a career in New York City to pursue fashion, art and creation in China. Her label Luvon by Liu Lu, with equal inspiration from New York and Beijing, reflects her attitude toward life and highlights a Chinese sense of beauty. Her clothes are aimed at cosmopolitan, independent Chinese women. Her designs are known for their simple elegance and playful sexiness.
Luvon by Liu Lu also reflects social and humanitarian elements in its designs for each upcoming season to encourage women to channel the power of her love by giving back and improving the world around her one small step at a time.
Her latest spring/summer 2015 collection, Water Knows, was inspired by Japanese scientist Masaru Emoto’s series of 122 photos of water in its varying crystalline states.
“Each drop of water carries a consciousness. Water is the source of life. When everyone among us assumes the essence of water and moves with the flow, living life with love and thankfulness, we collectively make the world around us warm and endearing. Such is the power of our minds, capable of making great changes and creations,” she said.
Weili Zheng
Zheng Weili’s cross-cultural explorations have been imbued with a lively intelligence and a spirit of creative entrepreneurship that reflects the essence of contemporary women.
From a vision free from geographical borders, Zheng’s brand Weili Zheng reflects her own spirit and life concept. The Weili Zheng woman tackles the urban world with the sweetness and strength that comes from the past; she is a modern traveler who faces all obstacles using the power of color, not taking herself too seriously but determined to smile in the face of reality.
For the latest fall/winter 2015 collection she has shown at Tranoi during Paris Fashion Week. The collection includes Oriental flair such as the dragon motif on the back of the bomber jacket with corduroy sleeves and wool cloth body or the shirts inspired by traditional Oriental uniforms. They come in different colors.
Zheng was born in Zhejiang Province and raised in Italy.
Shaoo
The Shanghai-born, Paris-based Tong’s Shaoo line features black and white Hetian jade, pearls and a diamond for a fun and glittery look.
In addition to her fine jewelry collection, the designer has been developing a wide range of leather bags and clutches under the line Shaoo Shadow. They share the same philosophy and reflect her personality. Her collection is for those who value refined but quirky forms manipulated through impeccable craftsmanship.
She recently set up a showroom in the city’s Bund area.
