A meaty experience at JW’s California Grill

JW’S California Grill, the award-winning steakhouse atop the iconic JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai Tomorrow Square, has introduced its new dinner menu with a twist.

Acclaimed as one of the best steakhouses in town, JW’s California Grill is well known for its superior quality steaks, seafood, extensive wine list, breathtaking views and flawless service. It is an ideal place to enjoy an efficient business lunch, a premium full-course dinner or a sumptuous Sunday brunch with friends or family.

The Grill’s chef, Joan Ruiz Alba, has incorporated his own style into the new menu.

“We use the finest ingredients with simple yet creative cooking methods to fully deliver authentic flavors. It’s important to let the food do the talking and leave nothing but the essence of the ingredients,” he says.

An open kitchen is nicely arranged next to the Grill’s entrance, giving a “wow” type of welcome to everyone entering the restaurant. It serves the world’s best ham, Joselito Iberico, fresh imported oysters, cheeses, salads, Mediterranean olives and all the appetizers.

For the new dinner menu, Alba chooses lightweight starters inspired by Mediterranean flavors. Delicacies such as beef carpaccio with vodka vinaigrette, arugula, aged Parmesan and foie gras shavings, and poached egg with balsamic portobello mushrooms and foie gras are ideal for the summer season.

“We want to offer our customers some light, healthy and refreshing starters to kick off their meals,” Alba says.

For the main course, the must-try items include seared tuna with eggplant puree and Kalamata olive sauce, or live Boston lobsters, which can be grilled or poached. There is also the slow-cooked Australian lamb shank with mushrooms and goat cheese sauce that is cooked over 14 hours to make sure the flesh is extremely tender.

For those looking for classic American “surf and turf,” the menu includes a tomahawk steak with Boston lobster. The impressively large steak is an Australian creation that is beef’s answer to rack of lamb. The 1kg tomahawk is served with half a fresh lobster and is more than enough to be shared with others.

Alba’s summer dessert menu includes jasmine Chantilly cream, mango coulis, lemon biscuits and lemon macaroons.

“JW’s California Grill is a much celebrated steakhouse with a lot of loyal guests,” Joan says. “It is important for me to keep the steakhouse tradition while bringing in some exciting new flavors. The new menu is light, healthy, authentic, well-executed and with premium ingredients. I cordially welcome everyone to try it.”

JW’s California Grill also offers an appetizing lunch with a variety of main courses to choose from at 198 yuan (US$32) per person for three courses and 228 yuan per person for four courses from Monday to Saturday. Prices are subject to 15 percent surcharge.
