Zoo hosting Tibetan antelope sculptures

THE Shanghai Zoo is inviting the public to paint 100 Tibetan antelope sculptures as part of its year-long program to raise awareness of the animal’s endangered status.

One of the sculptures is made from “Ailing,” the name given to the first Tibetan antelope ever reared by people. Its parents were killed by poachers and the baby was raised at the Kekexili Tibetan Antelope Rescue Center. Ailing died in 2005 at the age of 4.

People are invited to upload their painting renderings of Tibetan antelope at www.meng3.com. Those who upload their works will visit the zoo in April to paint Tibetan antelope sculptures there.

In May, the painted sculptures will be auctioned, and the money raised will be donated to Kekexili for the protection of the endangered wildlife species and the environment.

The public is also invited by the zoo to weave scarves for guardians of Tibetan antelopes in the Kekexili Nature Reserve between February and April as part of the program. The scarves will be sent to Kekexili.

The over-exploitation of energy and biotic resources have contributed to the worsening environment and made the Tibetan antelope an endangered species in China, near extinction, said Bu Zhou, director of the Qinghai Kekexili National Nature Reserve.

The program, held jointly by the zoo and the reserve, will also include lectures and exhibitions on the protection of Tibetan antelope.

This year marks the Year of the Sheep, and the zoo will host a series of activities themed on sheep around the Spring Festival.

There will be exhibitions related to the culture, folk customs and knowledge of the animal, and visitors will be able to win gifts by participating in games such as looking for certain species of sheep inside the zoo and answering lantern riddles.

Exhibitions featuring various species of sheep like thars and bharals will also be held at the zoo during the festival.
