World-class illustration showcase

ARTWORKS from the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition are now on view at Duoyunxuan Art Center through October 7. The exhibition features hundreds of works from 70 artists from all over the world.
The touring exhibition was in Beijing earlier this summer. Other stops are slated for Shenzhen, Chengdu, Xi’an and Jinan.
The Bologna Illustration Awards, organized by Bologna Children’s Book Fair, have been given to outstanding illustrators since 1966. Every year, the award committee receives about 1,000 paintings that represent the international standard and direction in the illustration area. It has been widely described as the most respected award of its kind in the world.
The exhibition features original pieces created in 2015, including those from Brazilian illustrator Roger Mellow, winner of the 2014 Hans Christian Andersen Medal.
A range of illustration salons, classes and lectures will coincide with the exhibition. Organizers see the exhibition as an important opportunity for those working in children’s literature in China to learn from their peers overseas.
“After five years of preparation and effort with our Italian partners, I’m glad that the exhibition finally is coming to town,” said Yan
Xiaopeng, one of the organizers.
“We hope that Chinese illustrators, editors and readers will come and visit, so that one day some of our Chinese illustrators can be on par with top Western illustrators... Illustrations in children’s books are vital, because it’s visual images that are related to one’s first understanding of the world,” Yan added.
