Welcome back to the old and the new
THE historic Shanghai Theater on the corner of Shaanxi Road S. and Fuxing Road M. is welcoming visitors back after a six-year renovation.
“RE” — a crossover contemporary art exhibition — is the opening program for the revamped venue. Admission is free.
Displayed are old items, such as wooden cases, used tires, discolored plastic pins and electric wires.
They are shaped into dozens of audio-visual installations by about 30 emerging young artists.
“It is about the old encountering the new, which happens in almost all areas of our lives today,” says curator Zhang Ling.
“The old commodity encounters new channels, old parts encounter new industries, old designs encounter new usages, and old crafts encounter new technologies.
“The boundary between the old and the new are blurred, just like the reborn theater itself.”
The Shanghai Dramatic Arts Center’s new production, “Wilderness,” will hit the newly renovated theater from Friday to April 5, followed by a Contemporary Kunqu Art Week by Shanghai Zhangjun Kunqu Art Center between April 7 and 16.
