Summer packed with cultural events

ORGANIZERS of the fourth Shanghai Citizens Art Festival, which will run through the end of 2016, are planning thousands of new cultural events and programs across the city this summer.

These will include events and activities focused on time-honored crafts and traditions like straw weaving, knitting, cloth art and a city-wide Shanghai dialect contest. There will also be competitions related to ancient Chinese poetry, cooking and reading. A Chinese opera contest opened to teenage performers will hold its final round in July.

Specialty for children and youngsters, Shanghai Mass Art Center will host summer camps and workshops on archaeology, reading, handicrafts and fiction writing. One group of lucky students will even be selected to take part in an archaeological dig in north China’s Shanxi Province, where they will explore its buried secrets.

Shanghai Museum will invite children to workshops on ink rubbing, seal carving and painting on porcelains and fans. The workshops will provide insight into the aesthetics and charms of traditional Chinese arts.

The Shanghai Association of Collectors will host exhibitions of paintings, jewelry, tea pots and fans. Experts will give lectures to local collectors and organize charity auctions.

The second Vocal Asia Festival will be another summer highlight. The festival will feature a cappella performances, workshops and children’s classes.

On digital cultural service platform Culture Shanghai Cloud, people can get details about performances and exhibitions. There are also free tickets to theater and kid’s programs up for grabs on the platform’s mobile app, WeChat public account and official website.
