Star belly dancers to perform at gala

ONE of the most renowned belly dancers in the world, Egyptian star Dina (full name Dina Talaat Sayed Muhammad, but she goes by Dina) will debut in Shanghai, performing at a belly dance gala show at Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

A legendary figure on the international belly dance stage, Dina was named as “Last Egyptian Dancer” by Newsweek magazine. She appears on  magazine covers and performs around the world as well as giving workshops. She’s also a film and theater actress.

She will give the show in Shanghai together with other belly dancers.

Her career started in the early 1970s when she danced with the Reda Dance Troupe, and she became well-known in the 1990s.

In 2011, Dina released an autobiography, “My Freedom in Dancing,” that also had a French language edition.

Belly dance has a long history in the Middle East. Egypt is considered the home of the art form, which has two main styles: raqs baladi (folk/social belly dance) and raqs sharqi (literally oriental dancing).

Belly dancing has become increasing popular in China in recent years and is considered great exercise that’s suitable for all ages. In China, the most common style is Turkish, which is more energetic and athletic than the Egyptian style.
