Solo show duo at Minsheng museum
“YAN Bing” and “Chimera,” two solo exhibitions by artists Yan Bing and Zhou Xiaohu, are on display at Minsheng Art Museum through July 10.
When stepping into the exhibition hall, visitors are immediately drawn by the fluorescent green hued puppets resembling “Star Wars” soldiers at the entrance.
Zhou is one of China’s leading contemporary artists and a pioneer when it comes to incorporating animation into art. Born in 1961 in Changzhou, Zhou was awarded the CCAA Award in 2002 and 2006. His body of work includes video pieces, photography, installations and performance art.
For “Chimera,” Zhou has created an entirely new project that mixes Chinese philosophy and folk art, with narrative and creativity forming one fantastical scene that spans the main exhibition hall. In collaboration with the Zhejiang Taishun Puppet Theater, Zhou attempts to reflect his interpretation toward the Zhuangzi allegories, a famous collection of Chinese philosophical stories from the 4th century BC, through these puppet themed works.
Zhou created a set of life-sized puppets for the theater group and filmed them in different locations across China, culminating in a live show at the exhibition opening. The puppet action is presented in videos. This synchronization of space and time compels visitors to focus on a core idea of the show, offering a montage from multiple perspectives.
His “time-and-space” montage is further enhanced through a series of moving sculptures, installations and two-dimensional works throughout the exhibit.
Contrasting with Zhou’s bold, dynamic show is the more subdued works of Yan Bing, presented in his eponymous exhibition.
Born in 1980 in Tianshui, Gansu Province, Yan graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 2007. As one of the most active emerging artists in China, Yan is known for his use of ordinary and rough materials.
Obviously the color and texture of the Earth are what Yan is fascinated with on his canvas. In his eyes, “earth is where the presence of man resides and the ultimate destination of man’s destiny. It’s the uttermost background of life.” Imbued with the life experience of the artist, the nature of Yan’s materials takes on new meanings. Potatoes, apricot flowers and even mud become “silent witnesses” of the viewers, as if personified with their own intelligence.
Yan’s solo exhibition features works created from 2009 till the present. These include earlier works such as “Boxes,” “The Weight of Pain” and “Love” as well as new pieces made in 2016. Half of these works are on display for the first time. The emotions revealed in his works are complicated: the longing for simplicity and plainness is mixed with joyful bitterness.
