Sisters string out classics old and new

VIOLINIST Madalyn Parnas and her sister, cellist Cicely Parnas, formed the duo parnas in 1997 and will be performing in Shanghai.

The duo from the US won first prize at the 2008 International Chamber Music Ensemble Competition at Carnegie Hall and has released three recordings.

Madalyn, 22, and Cicely, 20, graduated from Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. The sisters perform not only classical masterpieces, but also work with contemporary composers. Their latest album “duo parnas NOW” this year featured works by living composers only.

They are the granddaughters of cellist Leslie Parnas.

The duo has performed in US festivals including Tannery Pond, Tanglewood, ShortGrass and Music Mountain, plus the Banff and Lachine Music Festivals and Bravo! Music Series in Canada, and the ProQuartet Festival in France.

Madalyn performs with a 1715 Allessandro Gagliano violin and Cicely performs with a 1712 Giovanni Grancino cello.

Venue: Shanghai Oriental Art Center

Address: 425 Dingxiang Rd, Pudong New Area
