Shanghai women of bygone era explored

ARTIST Liu Manwen is interested in the destiny of women.

Her exhibition, “Memory of the Time: Archive of Pretty Women,” explores this theme by looking at three famous Shanghai women — Zhou Xuan, Ruan Lingyu and Hu Die — during the Republic of China era (1912-1949).

Starting Sunday, Liu, chairwoman of the Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute Art Museum, will hold the exhibition.

“Through my works, I want to discuss the topic of women’s destiny through an angle of history and time,” she says.

The exhibition is organized by Shanghai 20 ART SPACE and will display about 20 paintings by Liu that focus on the classic moments of the female stars.

Liu says she uses the visual images to bind time and historical memories, visualizing them through her own brush, thus realizing her dream and pursuit as an artist. Liu plans to continue to explore this topic as a series, so we can expect more from the “Archive of Pretty Women.”

“As time goes by, flowers will fade away but the beautiful moment stays as classic,” says Liu.
