Shanghai Dance Theater presents new season

SHANGHAI Dance Theater will present their 2018 performance season from June 8 to July 1.

Dance drama lovers will be offered 14 performances of original productions, including “Farewell My Concubine,” “Crested Ibises” and “The Dances We Danced.”

“Farewell My Concubine,” based on a true historical event about ancient Chinese warlord Xiang Yu (232-202 BC), has received wide acclaims worldwide since its debut in 2003.

It tells the tragic love story of Xiang and his concubine Yu, who committed suicide.

“Crested Ibises” is also a representative work of the troupe. The dance drama with exquisite costumes, lavish scenes and graceful moves focuses on the protection of crested ibises, a rare species in China.

The production aims to raise people’s awareness of keeping a harmonious relationship with nature and other creatures we share the planet with.

“The Dances We Danced” features a few recent contemporary dance works by young choreographers. Many have won awards at domestic competitions.

According to officials from the troupe, they will develop the performance season into a cultural brand to create and display more excellent works.
