Shanghai Art Fair comes to Pudong

THE 2016 Shanghai Art Fair runs from today to Sunday at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center in Pudong New Area.

The fair was established in 1997 and is described as one of the largest and oldest events of its kind in Asia. This year, some 140 galleries from all over the world will attend. Works on display will run the gamut from oil paintings and ink-wash pieces to ceramics and video installations.

According to Gu Zhihua, the fair director, this is the first year the fair will be held outside of long-time venue ShanghaiMart in Hongqiao.

“The space with no columns inside the new exhibition hall will offer a more comfortable art environment for visitors to appreciate the artworks showcased there,” Gu added.

Among the galleries taking part in the event, about half are from overseas.

“Most participating galleries have been involved with the local art market for several decades, and they understand the aesthetic tastes and habits of local collectors,” Gu said.

Familiar names such as Chen Peiqiu, Zhang Huan and Xue Song are listed as attendees.

The fair caters to both seasoned art buyers as well as new collectors. A range of affordable pieces from young artists will be available, along with craft products and accessories based on the works of local artist Li Yirong.

Organizers have also invited several well-known art experts to lecture on a variety of art topics. Speakers will include renowned collector Ma Weidu and artist Ting Shaokuang.
