Russians coming with classic ballets

THE Russian State Ballet will present four classic works — “Swan Lake,” “Cinderella,” “The Sleeping Beauty” and “The Nutcracker” in May and June.

Exquisite costumes, stunning scenes and impelling musical scores are set to enthrall the audiences.

The troupe, which has toured around 80 countries and regions, will present a distinctive version of “Swan Lake” this time. The dancer who plays the role of Odile will do 32 fouette turns in one move.

“Cinderella,” which is based on the famous fairy tale, has spectacular dance scenes and luxurious costumes to create a romantic ambience. “The Sleeping Beauty,” a story of Princess Aurora who is cursed by the evil Carabosse, features impressive music and stage lighting.

The two-act ballet “The Nutcracker” will take audiences into a fantasy world where a girl meets a prince. It is a show for the whole family.

Organizers of the shows will also select promising and talented children to attend free ballet shows and workshops. The elegant art form is expected to be accessible to a younger generation of ballet enthusiasts in China.

Ballet artistes will meet with audiences at two local theaters over the next two months. Tickets vary from 80 to 880 yuan. For more information, please call 5108-5050.
